I headed to George’s Arcade on George Street because I knew of the little nest of goodies there.
Honest to Goodness is a tiny café located in the arcade. When you go in you have the counter with staff preparing the food behind it. You can order take-away or just sit and wait for someone to take your order. A member of staff greeted me straight away and looked after me the minute I was seated. Even though there were busy you could feel that they were organised.
The place isn’t fancy but they bake their own bread and serve inexpensive food. On the menu they have sandwiches (most are €6.95 eating in): The Mexican, Beef it Up, Goat cheese or Honest Club are amongst the list. They also make paninis (€6.95 in/€5.95 out) and if you want to watch your diet, you can go for one of their salads (€7.95 in) which they serve with their freshly baked bread.
What I can tell you about is their breakfast. They have healthy options such as porridge with honey or sugar (€4 in/€3 out), granola served with Greek yogurt and fruit salad (€5 in/€4 out). They also do eggy stuff like scrambled eggs on toast (€6.50 in/€5 out) or veggie / non-veggie omelette with side salad and toast for €6.95. It wouldn’t be Ireland if they didn’t have some sausage or bacon somewhere on the menu, the Honest breakfast, aka the Irish breakfast is €9.95 or the Honest start (€6.95 in/€5.95 out), their version of the traditional breakfast roll.
I went for the French toast (bien sur!) and got it with grilled banana and honey for only €6.95. First of all I thought it was a very reasonable price and when I saw it I thought I had made an excellent choice. It was substantial, sweet and tasty. I had a freshly squeezed orange juice for €3.20 which was excellent and boosted me for the whole day.
Honest to goodness is a great little place, a good spot for lunch breaks from work or shopping, breakfasts in the city centre or visiting Dublin.
Try it, it’s good, honest!
